Ceremonies Held to Mark Formation of Cooperative Societies in Bogra and Khulna
In accordance with the fiscal 2015 SGRA (Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers’ and Workers’ Network) project plan for Bangladesh, government registration of SGRA cooperative societies (shomobae shomitee) in Bogra and Khulna was completed and locally organized ceremonies to mark their formation were held on June 11 and 13.
The following is basic information about the two cooperative societies. It is hoped that by further expanding from now on, these societies will promote mutual aid among informal-sector workers and contribute toward improving and uplifting their livelihoods.
Bogra (Bogra division, Pabna district, Sadar subdistrict, Dogacchi Union)
Name: Mahendrapur Agricultural Produce Cooperative Society (Government registration number 14)
No. of members: 352 (as of end of July 2015)
Occupations of members: Tenant farmers, rickshaw drivers, handcart pushers, construction workers, etc.
Steering Committee: Secretary General Abdul Gafur and five others
Per capita investment: 20 taka (about 30 yen)
Membership dues: 50 taka per month (about 75 yen)
Khulna (Khulna division, Bagerhat district, Mollahat subdistrict, Boropora Union)
Name: Grassroots Agricultural and Fisheries Village Cooperative Society (Government registration number 22)
No. of members: 150 (as of end of July 2015)
Occupations of members: Fisheries, tenant farming, etc.
Steering Committee: Secretary General Bishnu Pada Pine and five others
Per capita investment: 10 taka (about 15 yen)
Membership dues: 100 taka per month (about 150 yen)
