Wage, Hours Worked, and Employment in 2023 －Real wages dropped 2.5%－

Average wage per person (“Regular employees” are divided into “full-time employees” and “part-time employees”)
- Average total monthly cash earnings for regular employees were 329,859 yen (up 1.2%), of which scheduled cash earnings were 270,289 yen (up 1.1%), non-scheduled cash earnings (overtime pay) were 18,980 yen (up 0.3%), and special cash earnings were 59,570 yen (up 2.0%). Real wages (average total monthly cash earnings) dropped 2.5%, marking the second consecutive year of decline amid rising inflation. (The consumer price index was up 3.2% over the previous year.)
- Average total monthly cash earnings for full-time employees were 436,849 yen (up 1.8%), of which scheduled earnings were 350,464 yen (up 1.6%), non-scheduled cash earnings (overtime pay) were 26,631 yen (1.0%), and special cash earnings were 86,385 yen (up 2.8%).
- Average total monthly cash earnings for part-time employees were 104,570 yen (up 2.4%), of which scheduled cash earnings were 101,465 yen (up 2.6%) and non-scheduled cash earnings (overtime pay) were 2,869 yen (up 1.6%).
The average hourly wage for part-time employees was 1,279 yen (up 4.6%).
Average number of hours worked per person
- The average monthly total of hours actually worked by full-time employees was 163.4 hours (up 0.7%), of which the number of scheduled hours worked was 149.7 hours (up 0.9%).
- The average monthly total of hours actually worked by part-time employees was 79.2 hours (down 0.4%), of which the number of scheduled hours worked was 77.0 hours (down 0.5%).
Employment
- The regular employees index was 103.9 (up 1.9%). By employment pattern, the full-time employees index was 102.3 (up 1.9%) and the part-time employees index was 107.6 (up 3.9%).
- The ratio of part-time employees was 32.22%, up 0.62 points.
