Nepal Trade Union Congress Independent (NTUC-I) and JILAF held a seminar on labour law reform in Kathmandu from Feb.23 to 25 with 45 participants (7 women included)from NTUC-I Central Committee, Affiliates, and Regional Committees. There has been a discussion about labour law reform for around 5 years in Nepal. The seminar aimed at collecting ideas and opinions from NTUC-I executives on drafts of labour legislation.
6 labout legislations are under discussion in Nepal. 3 out of 6 are new laws and the rest are revised ones. All laws have been drafted with support of ILO, and they have been under discussion among the Government, Employer side, and Labour side individually. NTUC-I and other trade unions in Nepal are now discussing the content of each law to build consensus among trade unions.
In the seminar, experts from ILO and other organizations joined and gave lectures on strength and weakness of the preset and the draft labour laws and had discussions with the participants.
It is not sure when labour laws will be reformed, but we will keep eyes on this labour law reform process.
