JILAF visited Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka from September 13 (Thursday) to 17 (Monday) for the SGRA project (Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers’ and Workers’ Network), which JILAF is implementing with grants from the Japanese government (Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare). During the visit, Sri Lanka’s first Life Support Seminar was held for 34 persons from livestock farms, as well as the first meeting of the Nuwara Eliya Dissemination Working Committee.
The Life Support Seminar, which took place on September 15, was organized mainly by the Nuwara Eliya Dissemination Working Committee, comprising representatives of the government, labour, and management in the Nuwara Eliya area, and the 34 livestock farmers who participated became new network members. The seminar included lectures on know-how for the improvement of household finances and dairy farming know-how, and the participants gained useful information for the improvement of their livelihoods.
After the Life Support Seminar, the first meeting of the Nuwara Eliya Dissemination Working Committee was held, with specific discussions taking place on activities, such as vocational training, in the area. The participants confirmed the implementation of training toward the improvement of milk processing and the cowshed environment. The meeting was also attended by the representative and liaison manager of the SGRA project in Bangladesh, who shared information on activities and the follow-up of network members in Bangladesh.
