RENGO Holds 88th May Day Central Rally

RENGO (Japanese Trade Union Confederation) held the 88th May Day Central Rally in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo, on April 29 with the participation of about 40,000 union members. The rally's slogan was "Let's eliminate long working hours, realize decent work, raise and support minimum standards, and correct inequalities right away!"
In the ceremony held after an opening demonstration, RENGO President Rikio Kozu, speaking on behalf of the organizers, sent a message to trade union members nationwide, urging them to organize and pool the strengths of all working people, to continue the trend of raising and supporting minimum standards and correcting inequalities, and to aim to realize a secure society centered on work as its core. Speeches were also given by Minshinto (Democratic Party) President Renho and, representing the government, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Yasuhisa Shiozaki. In addition, appeals were heard from nonprofit organizations, nonregular workers, and RENGO Kumamoto on behalf of the earthquake disaster area in Kumamoto Prefecture. Finally, the participants approved the May Day Declaration and closed the rally with three "Let's do our best together!" chants.
In parallel with the rally, RENGO-affiliated organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and nonprofit organizations held exhibitions. JILAF organized a booth to deepen understanding of its international exchange activities in the field of labour through pamphlets and panel displays introducing its various projects. JILAF also exhibited and sold items produced through its SGRA projects (Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers' and Workers' Network) in Nepal and Bangladesh.
