Economic and Labour Situation in Japan (January 2013)

Industrial Production
Industrial production in November 2012 decreased by 1.7% from the previous month, registering a decline for the first time in two months and down 5.8% year-on-year. The index in November was 86.4 (seasonally adjusted).
Industries that mainly contributed to the decrease were as follows: (1) general machinery, (2) fabricated metals, and (3) information and communication electronics equipment, in that order.
Commodities that mainly contributed to the decrease were as follows: (1) cell phones, (2) drive, transmission, and control parts, and (3) steel bridges, in that order.
According to the Survey of Production Forecast in Manufacturing, production was expected to increase by 6.7% in December and by 2.4% in January.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey in November
(1) Expenditure for Two-or-More-Person Households
The average monthly consumption expenditure per two-or-more-person household in November 2012 was 273,772 yen, up 0.1% in nominal terms and up 0.2% in real terms year-on-year.
(2) Income and Expenditures for Workers' Households
The average monthly income per household stood at 432,681 yen, up 2.0% in nominal terms and up 2.1% in real terms year-on-year.
The average consumption expenditure was 300,181 yen, up 1.7% in nominal terms and up 1.8% in real terms year-on-year.

Labour Force Survey Monthly Results
(1) Employment
The number of employed persons in November 2012 was 62.97 million, a decrease of 60,000, or 0.1%, from the same month in the previous year.
(2) Unemployment
The number of unemployed persons in November 2012 was 2.60 million, a decrease of 210,000, or 7.5%, from the same month in the previous year.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.1%, down 0.1points from the previous month.

According to a separate report released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, job availability was unchanged in November 2012, with the ratio of job offers to jobseekers standing at 0.80, the same level as in the previous month. This figure means that there were 80 jobs available for every 100 jobseekers.

Consumer Prices
The consumer price index in Japan in November 2012 was 99.5 (2010=100), down 0.3% from the previous month and down 0.1% from the same month in the previous year.
