Results of the National Tax Agency’s Survey on Private-Sector Wages in 2024
Average Annual Wage for Employees was 4.78 Million yen, Up 3.9%
According to the results of a survey of private-sector wages released by the National Tax Agency in September, the number of private-sector wage earners employed throughout the whole of 2024 was 60.77 million, up 0.2% over the previous year.
The number of employees who worked throughout the year was 51.37 million, up 1.2% over the previous year. By gender, there were 29.25 million men, up 1.3%, and 22.12 million women, up 1.0%. The total number of regular wage earners was 34.31 million, up 2.3% from the previous year. The total number of non-regular wage earners was 12.56 million, down 2.3%.
The average annual wage for employees who worked throughout the year was 4.78 million yen, 3.9% up over the previous year, which marks the fourth consecutive year of growth. Broken down by gender, the average wage for men was 5.87 million yen, up 3.2%, and for women, 3.33 million yen, up 5.5%.
By regular and non-regular status, the average annual wage was 5.45 million yen for regular workers (full-time workers), up 2.8% over the previous year, and 2.06 million yen for non-regular workers, up 2.2%.
Broken down, average annual wages consist of an average salary and various allowances, which were a salary of 4.03 million yen, up 3.8% over the previous year, plus an average bonus of 746,000 yen, up 4.5% over the previous year. Looking at this data by gender, the average salary and allowances for men were 4.91 million yen in total, up 3.1%, and for women, 2.86 million yen in total, up 5.4%. The average bonus for men was 957,000 yen, up 3.6%, and for women, 466,000 yen, up 6.4%.
Among the 51.37 million salaried workers who were employed throughout the year, 37.53 million people paid income tax through withholding, accounting for 73.1%, a decrease of 13.2 points from the previous year. Additionally, the total tax amount was 11.363 trillion yen, representing 5.25% of the total salary income of taxpayers, a decrease of 0.07 points from the previous year.
Looking at the average annual salary per employee who worked throughout the year by size of establishment, establishments with fewer than 10 employees recorded an average of 3.92 million yen (4.86 million yen for men and 2.82 million yen for women), whereas establishments with 5,000 or more employees recorded an average of 5.39 million yen (6.94 million yen for men and 3.35 million yen for women).
Looking at the average annual salary per employee who worked throughout the year by industry, the highest-salaried industry was Electricity, Gas, Heat Supply, and Water at 8.32 million yen, followed by Finance and Insurance at 7.02 million yen, while the lowest was Accommodation and Food Services at 2.79 million yen.
