JILAF visited Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and the districts of Bhaktapur and Parsa from May 30 to June 11, 2013, for the SGRA (Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers’ and Workers’ Network) project. The project is being implemented in these two districts.
This time JILAF organized Advanced Life Support Seminars (Adv. LSS) and Training of Trainers (TOT) for a total of 110 participants (55 people in each district) from the around 300 people, mainly informal-sector workers, who have been formed into networks to, among other things, improve and uplift their livelihoods, promote employment, and establish mutual-aid schemes. The Adv. LSS provided information on such matters as public programs contributing to livelihood improvement; the TOT aimed to develop human resources to promote the project locally.
At the Adv. LSS, Dipa Bharadwaj of the Center for Labour and Social Studies NEPAL (CLASS NEPAL), a Nepalese nongovernmental organization active mainly in the field of workers’ education, was invited as the lecturer, and information was given on social security, such as benefits by the Nepalese government for the elderly, disabled persons, and pregnant women and public services that can be used free of charge.
The participants were heard to make such comments as “There was a lot of information that I heard for the first time, and I really want to utilize these services” and “Rather than keeping it to myself, I want to share the helpful information with others in the community.”
In the TOT, meanwhile, lecturers were invited from the National Cooperative Federation of NEPAL to give an outline of cooperative societies, called sahakari in Nepal.
In the current fiscal year the SGRA project in Nepal aims to establish sahakari as mutual-aid schemes for the network members (approx.300) and operate them through the sale of candles, knitwear, and other products made by the members who have completed JILAF’s vocational training program and so on, thereby increasing the income of members.
