SGRA Project in Laos (August)

On August 17–20 a follow-up seminar for sugar cane farmers and a Life Support Seminar for vegetable farmers were held in the southern province of Savannakhet in Laos as part of the SGRA project (Supporting Grass-Roots Activities through the International Employers’ and Workers’ Network).
The follow-up seminar was held on August 18 for a group of 40 sugar cane farmers in the district of Xaybuly, and the Life Support Seminar was held on August 19 for a group of organic vegetable farmers in the district of Kaysone . Government, labour, and management members of the Savannakhet Working Committee themselves served as lecturers, utilizing the know-how about the holding of Life Support Seminars and knowledge about the establishment of an SGRA cooperative society that they had learned in Enlarged Working Committee meetings in May and July of this year. They therefore organized and held the seminars quite independently and autonomously. The Lao Federation of Trade Unions (LFTU) handled the lecture on an SGRA cooperative society, the Lao Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare on social insurance, and the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI) on marketing.
JILAF then inspected a farm of the organic vegetable group, checking actual cultivation conditions and issues and exchanging opinions on future activities and other matters. Specifically, it was confirmed that from September 2016 (1) an SGRA booth would be established in a market operated by the LNCCI for the direct sale of SGRA products; (2) study tours would be organized to model districts in Laos; (3) experts would be asked for advice about the cultivation of marketable vegetables and quality improvement; and (4) an SGRA cooperative society would be established and managed (with funds from the sale of organic vegetables).
