Results of Survey of Private-Sector Wages in 2016

Ratio of women much higher among nonregular workers (70.0%) than regular workers (31.7%)

According to the results of a survey of private-sector wages released by the National Tax Agency in September, the number of private-sector wage earners employed in Japan throughout the whole of 2016 was 48.69 million, up 1.6%, or 750,000, over the previous year. By gender, the number of men was 28.62 million (up 1.1%, or 31,000), and the number of women was 20.07 million (up 2.3%, or 443,000). By regular and nonregular status, the total number of regular workers was 31.82 million (up 1.3%). By gender, there were 21.72 million male (up 0.6%) and 10.10 million female (up 2.8%) regular workers, so the ratio of women in this category was 31.7%. The total number of nonregular wage earners was 11.55 million (up 2.8%). By gender, there were 3.48 million male (up 4.3%) and 8.07 million female (up 2.2%) nonregular workers, so the ratio of women in this category was much higher at 70.0%.

Japanese workers earn average of 4.216 million yen (US$3.7 million) a year, up only 0.3% in 2016

The average annual wage in 2016 was 4.216 million yen, up 0.3%, or 12,000 yen, year-on-year. The average annual wage for men was 5.211 million yen (up 0.1%, or 6,000 yen) and for women 2.797 million yen (up 1.3%, or 37,000 yen). The rate of increase was higher for women.

By regular and nonregular status, the average annual wage was 4.869 million yen for regular workers (up 0.4%, or 20,000 yen) but only 1.721 million yen for nonregular workers (up 0.9%, or 16,000 yen).

By gender, for regular workers, the average annual wage was 5.397 million yen for men (up 0.2%) and 3.733 million yen for women (up 1.7%), while for nonregular workers it was 2.278 million yen for men (up 0.9%) and 1.481 million yen for women (up 0.6%).

The survey showed that many women are employed as nonregular workers with low wage levels.
