Economic and Labour Situation in Japan (July 2013)

Industrial Production
Industrial production is showing signs of a moderate recovery.
Industrial production in May 2013 increased by 2.0% over the previous month, registering an increase for the fourth consecutive month; it was down 1.0% year-on-year. The index in May was 97.8 (seasonally adjusted).
Industries that mainly contributed to the increase were as follows: (1) general-purpose production and business-oriented machinery, (2) electrical machinery, and (3) chemicals (excluding drugs), in that order.
Commodities that mainly contributed to the increase were as follows: (1) parts and accessories of steam turbines, (2) parts and accessories of boilers, and (3) water tube boilers, in that order.
According to the Survey of Production Forecast in Manufacturing, production was expected to decrease 2.4% in June and to increase 3.3% in July.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey in May
(1) Expenditure for Two-or-More-Person Households
The average monthly consumption expenditure per two-or-more-person household in May 2013 was 282,366 yen, down 1.9% in nominal terms and down 1.6% in real terms year-on-year.
(2) Income and Expenditure for Workers' Households
The average monthly income per household stood at 422,724 yen, up 1.2% in nominal terms and up 1.5% in real terms year-on-year.
The average consumption expenditure was 307,926 yen, up 1.1% in nominal terms and up 1.4% in real terms year-on-year.

Labour Force Survey Monthly Results
(1) Employment
The number of employed persons in May 2013 was 63.4 million, an increase of 430,000, or 0.7%, over the same month in the previous year.
(2) Unemployment
The number of unemployed persons in May 2013 was 2.79 million, a decrease of 180,000, or -6.1%, from the same month in the previous year.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.1%, the same level as in the previous month.

According to a separate report released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, job availability improved slightly in May 2013, with the ratio of job offers to jobseekers standing at 0.90, up 0.01 point over the previous month. This figure means that there were 90 jobs available for every 100 jobseekers.

Consumer Prices
The consumer price index in Japan in May 2013 was 100 (2010=100), up 0.2% over the previous month and the same level as in the same month of the previous year.
