Economic and Labour Situation in Japan (April 2013)

Industrial Production
Industrial production shows some signs of having bottomed out, and it may be about to pick up.
Industrial production in February 2013 decreased by 0.1% from the previous month, registering a decline for the first time in three months; it was down 11.0% year-on-year. The index in February was 89.0 (seasonally adjusted).
Industries that mainly contributed to the decrease were as follows: (1) electronic parts and devices, (2) precision instruments, and (3) ceramic, stone, and clay products, in that order.
Commodities that mainly contributed to the decrease were as follows: (1) metal oxide semiconductor ICs (memory), (2) boiler parts and accessories, and (3) active matrix LCDs (liquid crystal devices) medium and small, in that order.
According to the Survey of Production Forecast in Manufacturing, production was expected to increase by 1.0% in March and by 0.6% in April.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey in February
(1) Expenditure for Two-or-More-Person Households
The average monthly consumption expenditure per two-or-more-person household in February 2013 was 268,099 yen, up 0.1% in nominal terms and up 0.8% in real terms year-on-year.
(2) Income and Expenditure for Workers' Households
The average monthly income per household stood at 476,256 yen, down 1.5% in nominal terms and down 0.8% in real terms year-on-year.
The average consumption expenditure was 298,682 yen, up 2.0% in nominal terms and up 2.7% in real terms year-on-year.

Labour Force Survey Monthly Results
(1) Employment
The number of employed persons in February 2013 was 62.42 million, an increase of 160,000, or 0.3%, over the same month in the previous year.
(2) Unemployment
The number of unemployed persons in February 2013 was 2.77 million, a decrease of 120,000, or 4.2%, from the same month in the previous year.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.3%, up 0.1 point over the previous month.

According to a separate report released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, job availability was unchanged in February 2013, with the ratio of job offers to jobseekers standing at 0.85, the same level as in the previous month. This figure means that there were 85 jobs available for every 100 jobseekers.

Consumer Prices
The consumer price index in Japan in February 2013 was 99.2 (2010=100), down 0.2% from the previous month and down 0.7% from the same month in the previous year.
