The Economic and Labour Situation in Japan (January 2012)
Industrial Production
Industrial production in November 2011 decreased 2.6% from the previous month, registering a decrease for the first time in two months and down 4.0% from the previous year. The index in November was 90.1 (seasonally adjusted).
Industries that mainly contributed to the decrease were as follows: (1) transport equipment, (2) information and communications electronic equipment, and (3) iron and steel, in that order.
Commodities that mainly contributed to the decrease were as follows: (1) large passenger cars, (2) small passenger cars, and (3) cell phones, in that order. According to the Survey of Production Forecast in Manufacturing, production was expected to increase by 4.8% in December 2011 and by 3.4% in January 2012.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey in November
(1) Expenditure for Two-or-More-Person Households
The average monthly consumption expenditure per two-or-more-person household for November 2011 was 273,428 yen, down 3.8% in nominal terms and down 3.2% in real terms from the previous year.
(2) Income and Expenditure for Workers' Households
The average monthly income per household stood at 424,272 yen, down 1.6% in nominal terms and down 1.0% in real terms from the same month in the previous year.
The average monthly consumption expenditure per household was 295,066 yen, down 4.7% in nominal terms and down 4.1% in real terms from the previous year.

Labour Force Survey Monthly Results (January 2012)
Since September 2011, the results for the whole of Japan, including Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima Prefectures, have become available. However, there are still some districts in coastal areas where the survey is not being conducted due to damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. Figures from March through August 2011 for the whole of Japan are missing; data excluding these three prefectures are included for this period.

(1) Employment
The number of employed persons in November 2011 was 62.60 million, an increase of 80,000, or 0.1%, over the previous year.

(2) Unemployment
The number of unemployed persons in November 2011 was 2.80 million, a decrease of 380,000, or 11.9%, from the previous year.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.5%, the same level as the previous month.

According to a separate report released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, job availability improved slightly in November, with the ratio of job offers to job seekers standing at 0.69, up 0.02 points over the previous month. This figure means that there were 69 jobs available for every 100 job seekers.

Consumer Prices
The consumer price index for Japan in November 2011 was 99.6 (2010=100), down 0.3% from the previous month and down 0.2% from same month of the previous year.
