Industrial production in October increased 2.4% over the previous month, registering an increase for the first time in two months and up 0.4% over the previous year. The index in October was 92.7 (seasonally adjusted).
Industries that mainly contributed to the increase were as follows: (1) transport equipment, (2) general machinery, and (3) chemicals (excluding drugs), in that order.
Commodities that mainly contributed to the increase were as follows: (1) large passenger cars, (2) small passenger cars, and (3) drive transmission and control parts, in that order.
According to the Survey of Production Forecast in Manufacturing, production was expected to drop 0.1% in November and rise 2.7% in December.
Family Income and Expenditure Survey in October
(1) Expenditure for two-or-more-person households
The average monthly consumption expenditure per two-or-more-person household for October was 285,605 yen, down 0.6% in nominal terms and down 0.4% in real terms from the same month in the previous year.
(2) Income and expenditure for workers' households
The average monthly income per household stood at 449,749 yen, down 3.0% in nominal terms and down 2.8% in real terms from the same month in the previous year.
The average monthly consumption expenditure per household was 314,275 yen, down 2.0% in nominal terms and down 1.8% in real terms from the previous year.
Labour Force Survey Monthly Results (October 2011)
From October 2011, the results for the whole of Japan, including Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima Prefectures, have become available. However, there are still some districts in coastal areas where the survey is not being conducted due to damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. Figures from March through August 2011 for the whole of Japan are missing; data excluding these three prefectures are included for this period.
The number of employed persons in October was 62.64 million, a decrease of 220,000, or 0.3%, from the previous year.
The number of unemployed persons in October was 2.88 million, a decrease of 460,000, or 13.8%, from the previous year.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.5%, up 0.4% over the previous month.

According to a separate report released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, job availability remained the same in October, with the ratio of job offers to job seekers standing at 0.67, the same level as the previous month. This figure means that there were 67 jobs available for every 100 job seekers.
The consumer price index for Japan in October was 99.8 (2010=100), 0.1% down from the previous month and the previous year.
