The Economic and Labour Situation in Japan in October 2010

Industrial Production

Industrial production in October decreased 1.8% from the previous month, showing a decline for the fifth consecutive month, although it was up 4.5% year on year. The index for October was 91.1 (seasonally adjusted).
Industries that mainly contributed to the decline were as follows: (1) transport equipment, (2) electronic parts and devices, and (3) other manufacturing, in that order.
Commodities that mainly contributed to the decline were as follows: (1) large passenger cars, (2) small passenger cars, and (3) cellular telephones, in that order.
According to the Survey of Production Forecast in Manufacturing, production is expected to increase 1.4% in November and 1.7% in December.

Family Income and Expenditure Survey

(1) Expenditure for two-or-more-person households The average monthly consumption expenditure per two-or-more-person household in October was 287,433 yen, down 0.1% in nominal terms and down 0.4% in real terms year on year.

(2) Income and expenditures for workers' households in October The average monthly income per household stood at 494,398 yen, up 7.5% in nominal terms and up 7.2% in real terms year on year.

The average monthly consumption expenditure per household was 320,727 yen, up 4.7% in nominal terms and up 4.4% in real terms year on year.

Labour Force Survey Monthly Results

(1) Employment
The number of employed persons in October 2010 was 62.86 million, an increase of 150,000, or 0.2%, over the previous year.

(2) Unemployment
The number of unemployed persons in October 2010 was 3.34 million, a decrease of 100,000, or 2.9%, from the previous year.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.1%.

According to a separate report released by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, job availability also improved in October, with the ratio of job offers to job seekers rising to 0.56 from 0.55 in the previous month. This figure means that 56 jobs were available for every 100 job seekers.

Consumer Prices

The consumer price index for Japan in October 2010 was 99.5 (2005=100), up 0.4% over the previous month and down 0.6% year on year.
